The Old Friends Meet Again in Ipoh Kopitiam

Ipoh Kopitian 21 May

Kee Mun and Kai Chee discussed 国家大事 。。。。。

Aiyah, this little guy was being illusive with us on the emails before we saw him again in Ipoh this trip. We said we would shake him down and we did. 我们不会放过他的, 嘿嘿。。。

Ipoh Mari Again ..... 2 May 2009

Kee Mun, Tali, Jeffrey Ong, Atari Wong, met with Ek Kok in Ipoh on 2 May 2009 night. Last I know I was connected to Ek Kok via Skype. I had a long chat with our friend and I appreciate his openness and time for me. Ek Kok, I can't say more than "you are strong" and "thank you for sharing"..... Here are two Skype snaps I took. I have no doubt KM and Tali will send me more photos and maybe a brief report.

Our friend Ek Kok

Our friend Tauke Jeff Ong

Tali / Kee Mun and family / Tuck Cheong / Jeffrey:

Thanks for the time and food at Royal Perak Golf Club, Ipoh Old Town Coffee, char koey teow at Gunung Rapat, and the breakfast at Ipoh Garden South.

Kee Mun / Captain - thanks for the SKYPE and the long distance call on my health issue. I hope to handle it well. No worry from all.

Fook Kheong - Owe you an apology. I should have called you before driving to Ipoh on my own.

Chun Ngan - So surprise to see you for the 1st time after 30 years. I was about to depart Ipoh for KL. Kee Mun told us to wait. He just received your call that you are at Simpang Pulai exit. You really caught all of us by surprise. We sure will catch up with each others for the "lost time".

Regards

Ek Kok

Kee Mun and Tali's Preliminary Report On The Exciting Ipoh Round 2 - Ipoh Mari ! (Part 1)

Ed: As as as I can observe from the number of photo shots coming in and the explanations from Tali and Kee Mun on what "really happened" that night I can deduce there are plenty of confusions amongst those not in attendance. However I can upload these preliminary reactions from people on the ground that night, Kee Mun and Tali. The rest of the 精采类 we wait till further report!

I think it was INCREDIBLE that the KLites made it their business to meet the Ipoh Mari guys in this 2nd Round! The 1978ers Spirit is very much alive. Thanks guys for the efforts!

I can't help but feel that from this photo we can see that Seng Kian, Kee Mun, Kong Jai and Hock Choong "looked" HaPpy, but NOt ThE OThEr FOUr gUys! Wong Sir is missing in this pic, gone to take a sip of his coke?!

Siew Yee Wah the official 1978er PHOTOGRAPHER wearing a sheepish 苦笑 because he knew he owe us the Ipoh 1st Round photos ! I think the 饿鬼 at the back of him is Siew Fook Kheong???

(Kee Mun)

Hi ! Gang of '78,

"广仔"- your naked photo ! ! ! How lah !

Good day !

Kee Mun

(Tali)

MOST OF US WENT TO THE TOILET MORE THAN 3 TIMES !BECAUSE WE HAD 3 SESSIONS ON THAT NIGHT !

WE STARTED IN THE ' PARADISE ' WITH 10 COMRADES & DINED IN THIS OKP'S FAVORITE MAKAN PLACE & ENDED UP IN THE SAME ' KOK ' WITH ONLY 5 SURVIVORS. THE REST WERE RETIRED EARLY. BACHA 放我地飞机!AWOL !

ROUND 4 ? ROUND 5 ? MAJORITY WIN, SIR !

猫王 is belting away his 陈年老歌 whilst the rest of the GANG behtahan him! In his enjoyment of hearing his own voice (typical of BOSSES) 猫王 still hangs on to his Green Label! 佩服, 佩服 .....

(TALI)

OK. Some detail of the 2nd round @ Ipoh Mari :-

WE HAVE MET A LONG LOST FRIEND - BAO-BAO. EVERYBODY WAS IN VERY JOVIAL MOOD. KEE MUN, SENG KIAN, KONG JAI , HOCK CHOONG & BAO BAO WERE ALREADY AT THE SUMMER PARADISE WHEN I ARRIVED. BOON CHEE, KIM PENG CAME LATER FOLLOWED BY WONG SIR . ROUNDS OF BEERS WERE COMSUMED. TONG LEONG CAME LAST AFTER BAO BAO ADJOURNED. THAT'S WHY WE DO NOT HAVE TONG LEONG IN THE GROUP PICTURE.

EVERYBODY HAD GOOD FUN; DRINKING, CHATTING, SHARING JOKES & SINGING. OF COURSE, THE SINGING WAS STARTED BY OUR 猫王. KONG JAI & SENG KIAN ALSO SHOWED THE SINGING TALENT ! WONG SIR WAS DRINKING COKE AS EXPECTED THROUGH OUT THE WHOLE SESSION. AT LEAST 3 - 4 GLASSES, IF I AM NOT MISTAKEN

WE WERE ALL WAITING FOR THE ' BATCHA ' TO COME BUT HE DIDN'T TURN UP. HOCK CHOONG LEFT EARLY FOR ANOTHER PROGRAMME.

( NOT MUCH HAPPENING HERE, JUST A BUNCH OF UNCLES ENJOYING THERE HAPPY HOURS TO THE FULLEST. LUCKILY, THE VENUE WAS NOT CROWDED. )

KIM PENG LED US TO A MAKAN PLACE IN OLDTOWN, SOMEWHERE NEAR THE IPOH PADANG, AND WE CONTINUED WITH THE ' SNOW BEER' & THE LEFTOVER BOTTLE OF GREEN LABEL FROM THE IPOH ROUND ONE. FOOD WAS DELICIOUS BUT NOBODY REALLY PAID MUCH ATTENTION TO IT. (Ed: Hmmm I wonder why that was? Was it because these bunch of uncles had other ulterior motives in mind? Tali would have to tell us more, don't you think?)

WE CALLED UP SIEW YEE WAH & INVITED HIM TO JOIN US. EVERYONE WAS ASKING FOR THE PHOTOS WHICH HE HAD PROMISED TO SEND US. ( USUAL EXCUSE - VERY, VERY BUSY - LAH ! ) A CALL WAS MADE TO HENG EK KOK & EVERYONE HAD A SHORT CHAT WITH HIM.

THE DRINKS CONTINUED TO FLOW & SUGGESTIONS WERE MADE FOR THE NEXT ROUND TO BE HELD IN K.L. ,WITH SENG KIAN , BOON CHEE, MORE THAN HAPPY TO BE THE NEXT HOST. ( AND OTHER VENUES - SUCH AS PLACES TOWARD THE NORTHERN TERRITORY WERE ALSO SUGGESTED ! ) (Ed: What Northern Territory? China or NT in Australia?) THE ONLY REQUEST IS THAT WE WOULD LIKE TO HAVE THE OZ , CHINA & KIASU FELLOWS TO ATTEND THIS ROUND 3. SO, WE ARE SENDING THE INVITATION OUT MUCH EARLY & LET YOU ALL TO HAVE SOME EARLY PLANNING. AS KC MAK SAID, WHY WAIT UNTIL NEX YEAR ? ( KC, YOU BETTER START TO PLAN YOUR SCHEDULE NOW ! ) (Ed: Some people think that KC Mak had already dropped enough hint that he might not be around for the 2010 Reunion.....)

KEE MUN WAS THE OFFICIAL CAMERA MAN & BUSY TAKING SHOTS AFTER SHOTS & EVEN VIDEO TAPING. I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT HE HAS SNAPPED THROUGH OUT THE WHOLE NITE. ( EVEN IN THE KOK ! )

THERE WERE THE USUAL ' WINE & SONG ' SESSION IN THE SAME ' KOK ' AS SOME OF YOU HAD PATRONISED , WHICH CONTINUED UNTIL PAST MIDNIGHT. DETAIL OF HAPPENING IN THE KOK WILL NOT BE REVEALED UNLESS WE GOT THE CONSENSUS OR ' REWARDS ' ( as KM has mentioned ). ONLY ONE HINT, THERE WAS ONLY FIVE SURVIVORS AT THE KOK. (Ed: Have you considered maybe the rest of us do not want you to air your dirty laundry out in this post. So thank God you did not!!!)

OVERALL, I PRESUME EVERYONE PRESENT HAD FUN, AND WAS HAPPY TO MEET SOME OLD FRIENDS, AND HAPPIER TO KNOW MORE ABOUT THE OLD FRIENDS , AND EVEN HAPPIEST TO DIG OUT SOME OLD FRIENDS' UNTOLD STORIES . (Ed: PRESUME? Hello??? Also do you Tali and KM care to send follow up posts on the "untold" stories???)

THANK YOU. MATES. SEE YOU GUYS IN THE NEXT ROUND.

TALI

Could Tali Be "Upgraded" To 歌王 No Way!

(Ed: SIA's airfare Melbourne-Singapore return is AUD730 for travel before 30 Nov. And so Kin Fong and I will have our hats out looking for donations from you guys!!!!)

Video Evidence Above!!!!

Tali,

Good job !

A ! Don't get me into trouble lah ! No camera inside the "KOK" room lah, so , guys worry not ! Belakang Kira ! Next time, " 晤守I play".

One thing for sure, we are all happy to meet each other again, we joked, shouted and one can tell that it is really from the bottom of our heart. No barrier what so ever between us and we are all back to '78 school mates.

Would like to thank those who travelled all the way back from KL and also.....

1) Tong Leong for the drink at the Fun Pub +
2) Jefferey for the "野 味" makan +
3) Seng Kian for the "KOK" - 湿湿碎

Boon Chee also taken some photo during the "Makan" time so I believe that he is editing right now and will get us posted soon.

Good day !

Kee Mun

(Ed: This post is getting very loooong .....)

Soo Weng says " Stand By Me ..... "

March 27: Someone " commented in the "Comment" that this Ed/Kerani why he worked so fast in posting this particular blog post. The reason for fairness sake and to clear the "foul air" that this individual created; is that this Ed/Kerani "has nothing better to do" and his middle name is "Fast Eddie" mah, CAPISCH? He he he.....

We have a first dedication from a rose to all the monks and thorns and so to commemorate the occasion we will blog the event .....

(Let's face it, Tali was pretty happy about the prospects?! Is Tali the perennial representation of the monks to the nuns? Maybe he is? )

Really envy those of you who have (so much leisure) time to contribute to this blog... haha

Anyway, came across this and I would like to dedicate this to all of you.

Stand By Me

Have a great weekend!

Cheers,
Soo Weng

Lyrics of the song

When the night has come
And the land is dark
And the moon is the only light we see
No I wont be afraid
No I wont be afraid
Just as long as you stand, stand by me

And darling, darling stand by me
Oh, now, now, stand by me
Stand by me, stand by me

If the sky that we look upon
Should tumble and fall
And the mountain should crumble to the sea
I wont cry, I wont cry
No I wont shed a tear
Just as long as you stand, stand by me

And darling, darling stand by me
Oh, stand by me
Stand by me, stand by me, stand by me

Whenever youre in trouble wont you stand by me
Oh, now, now, stand by me
Oh, stand by me, stand by me, stand by me

Darling, darling stand by me
Stand by me
Oh stand by me, stand by me, stand by me

Can SW send me a recent photo for inclusion to this post? One taken in your favourite outfit lah, of course. This is a request from Tali ( I am taking a bit of licence here)......

Something To Share With You Guys .....

Mr Tali Poon (not Talipon) in his most opulent office pretending he is hard at work. We are sure he ruffled the stack of paperwork on his desk before the photo opportunity to "look good"
while composing the following "Insightful Message" to Stoba 1978ers
(Truth Be Told He Is Serving The 1978ers Community Well With His Time And Sense Of Humour)

Hi Guys,

I also have something to share with you guys, but I don't like politics ( although I could not avoid it ), and I do not to be lock-up like RPK.

So, here there go :

( Latest news from the Shipping / Logistic community during an after-hour-drink session that happen in Ipoh )

- 5 out of 10 largest shipping lines in the world are facing very serious financial dificulties ; might collapse in the worse ;

- near to 400 vessels around the world have been docked ;

- a numbers of planes had been groundedby reputable airlines round the world ;

- a very large Japanese shipping line has scrapped their order of 3 units 12,000 teus Mega Carriers ;

- many shipping liners ( including world top ) are implementing VSS round the globe ;

- the ocean freight rate had dropped to an unbelievable level ( USD 10.00 for 1 x 20' GP From Port Klang to Bangkok ! )

- many liners are unable to sustain with such low rate.

( On the other hand ) (Ed: Tali's speech rivals that of our infamous Prof. Dr. Ir.)

- LKF is snapping hot-air ballon out of his office window ; sips coffee with the lovely wife after dinner ( still enjoying life ) ;

- CSP still fly around in his single seater ; calling buddy with his Skype ; updating the STOBA blog ( enjoying life too ) ;

- SKM , PYS, FWB, WTC & LCK have planned for a happy hour session this weekend ( can enjoy life too ) ;

- TKC is still going around the Earth ( looking for something to enjoy ) ;

- Dr. FYM is busy attending to patients ( you've to look after your teeth, whether it's crisis or not ) ;

- LKH is happy negotiating ;

- YCN is having a good laugh at <> ;

- KC Mak keeps on rocking ;

- Jeffrey OKP worries nothing ( still enjoy singing, golfing & .... ) ;

- TSK, CTL enjoy the quiet semi-retire life ( without having to write to these guys ) ;

- Prof. Dr. CYS still pursuing his life greatest achivement ;

- LTV, LYF, LCH, KTM, SYW enjoy their life without the disturbance from the uncles' gang.

Are you enjoying you life ? Or are you worrying about the Crisis ?

It is a Wonderful World. Enjoy. Life has to go on.

Cheers

Tali
Additional comment from a Blogger:-
LBC and SFK are planning to be the next Australand or Sunrise Bhd of Oz
CYY, CKP and LYF are counting their CPF nest eggs and hoping that Temasek has not squandered away their retirement funds
The rest of the Stoba 1978 Malaysians who contribute to EPF are wishing that the KWSP declared dividend for 2008 was 10.5% and not 4.5%

Reunion Dinner Ipoh Friday Night 20 Feb 2009

Venue of the dinner : Oversea Restaurant 海外天 Ipoh

Tonight we met as a group for our 2009 Ipoh Reunion and some R&R. Some had more R&R than others! I will leave it to you to make the interpretations! Suffice to say many of us had not met for the past 30 years and so the scenes at the Reunion were a bit emotionally charged at times.

Ng Tuck Weng, Au Chee Keong, Yok Seng, Jeffrey Ong, Kong Jai (Yee Hong)
" Hey Big Tauke Ong, what important point are you making and gesturing? "

Teoh Seng Kian, Seong Pin, Weng Wah, Hock Choong, Tuck Weng, Chee Keong
" Yeah, yeah. yeah; we get your point Tauke Ong "

Seong Pin, Kong Ho 江胡,Tong Leong, Seng Kian
" We meant Peace To Tong Leong "

Yok Seng was the organiser of the 2009 Reunion event, and he did a splendid job. We awarded him THE BEST ORGANISER OF THE YEAR award because we did not have any other yardstick to base our judgment on. Albeit, we were "generally" happy that he was competent and I would say no one would object if we re-nominated him for the organising committee chairman's job for 2010! I think in coming days YS would send some suggestions to the Group as to the 2010 venue and perhaps even associated activities.....

Sneak previews for the 2010 Reunion:

Date: Before 16 Feb 2010 (年初二)

Venue: Pangkor Island

Psst! I didn't tell you this secret!

Pre-dinner drinks (beer only) were available at the Excelsior Hotel's Karaoke Fun Pub (the live band only started strumming and singing at 8pm, by which time we were trooping out to the restaurant for our dinner) for early birds. Dinner started at 8pm at the Oversea Restaurant opposite the hotel. We were seated in 2 tables, and were offered sumptuous food. Many were more impressed with the array of whiskey available (12 years, 15 years, black, green blue etc)than the food and promptly dived for the booze than the food! The whiskey lubricated those present and it was not necessary at all for those present to have to break the ice. Such was the power of the liquid.

It was note worthy to state that all present were merry and unpretentious. There was no barrier, we did not have our guards up and enjoyed each others' company and were happy to renew friendships. We were transported back in spirit to when we were boys in school uniforms once more that night ....

Tuck Weng, Chee Keong, Yok Seng, Jeffrey Ong, Kong Jai, Kong Jai's you-know-who, Siew Fook Kheong, Seong Pin
" Hey Tauke Ong, how many times do we have to hear from you? "

Tuck Weng, Chee Keong, Yok Seng, Kong Jai, Kong Jai's you-know-who, Fook Kheong, Yee Wah, Tuck Ming, Boon Chee
" Yok Seng: What the @#$%^?
Fook Kheong: There we go again ... "
Tuck Ming: I am putting my foot down! Oops I can't see my feet! "

At some point the dinner party reached its crescendo and I felt my ear drums were doing their maximum workload trying to cope with the din and voices (read noise). It was truly difficult to want to make a conversation, let alone be heard in this boisterous crowd! Such was the dBA (Noise level) and gaiety that was present at this reunion. I cannot begin to imagine if we put these 17 people in a board room meeting and ask them to express themselves, can you?

I can say on behalf of those present that were were happy to be in each others' company that night. It was quite touching and out-of-this-world. Are all reunions dinners like The One we just had?

After dinner we adjourned for karaoke at a nearby joint. Tuck Ming left after the dinner (his wife rang, apparently; or was I mistaken?). The guys who came from KL for this occasion (Seng Kian, Boon Chee, Kong Ho, Fook Kheong, Au Chee Keong, Kong Jai & partner, Weng Wah) gladly submitted themselves to this activity and we marched to this KOK. I mean we did not want to be seen as anti social or "weak" did we?! (In retrospect, Tuck Ming's wife probably did him a great favour ..... )

Mummy 7 was promptly summoned by you-know-who to his presence and pretty young things from one neighbouring super power country (some 6 hours away) were paraded in front of eager customers. Not all were weak-kneed but some were happy that the girls were there to provide some help with their singing or just for their company. Singing and chatting continued until just past mid night. We parted company and bid farewell. Some of us went for tauge chicken, chicken feet and hor fun at Oon Kee. Kee Mun and I left at 1.00am and hoped that the rest of you got home safe and sound with some fond memories created and stirred, ready for the big one next year.

Best regards, SP

P/S This is my brief summary of our reunion dinner for 2009. E&EO. I cannot guarantee clarity and correctness of information presented here as I might still be trying to recover from the said activities the night before! I welcome you to add your comments and new posts to this brief. If you are busy like some of us believed you were (but you read this blog as you do other Google group mails) then I hope you can at least get your secretary to send in some comments or posts on your behalf; after dictating to her your view of course! Cheers and many thanks for your company and friendship!
