老星, 老星, Old Memories, Old friends, something new

I arrive old Sing Saturday 3/9/2011. Yuet Fai picks me up and we go for dinner in Tiong Bahru. Thankfully the restaurant is air-conditioned. Because Old Sing is HUMID. Old class mates and friends come to meet and enjoy each others' company tonight.

We do not drink much like the KL folks do, just some Heineken to cool us down due to the heat and humidity. But there is nice food, and great company. That's what we are there to enjoy. I really am grateful they turn up, every one of them, and I have not seen Peng Chew for more than 30 years.

The Por Kee Eating House is not owned by our Uncle Por.

Some notable quotes of the night (and I shall not divulge the originators):

"I suppose we want to have it sometime in April and not in Singapore."

"We need more than 1 night."

"We need activities."

"Wouldn't it be nice if we just work 9 months in a year?"

"I need a new project to fill my time."

"Ah... let's discuss about your good ideas tomorrow."

"I am happy to roam around Ipoh re-living my memories."

"Our kids cannot live without internet."

"My kid is not interested in Chinese."

"I force my kids to watch Chinese drama programs."

"How many months this year have you worked?"

"What happen to Siew Yee Wah?"

"She can drink and does not get drunk!"

Huh??

Kin Fong stops by Kiasuland because .....

HE ONCE WAS ALSO A KIASU GUY THERE, IN FACT he lived there for 10 long years. All those years of being Kiasu living in such a milk-and-honey-land made his hair style one that is now admired by many Aussie friends .....

Perhaps it was the work pressure, or the salty Kiasu foods he ate or the bricks and mortar he had to calculate so that the companies he worked for at least make a decent profit .....

Anyway at least the other 3 kiasu uncles Yong Square, Uncle Por and Yuet Fai are still so "well-kept" and youthful looking. By the way was this the 88 Restaurant???

Photos Of the 80's Era .....

1980 to 1990, the prime of our lives ..... We were in our twenties, full of ambitions, yet tentative, stepping out of the bosoms of our family homes into the unknown ..... uni's, work places, relationships, maybe even permanent relationships for some .....

It was the period when we were shaping up our ideals, a time we pondered and charged ahead with vigor and energy. Do you have photos of your time in the world at work or at play or in higher education in the 1980's? Have a look inside your bottom drawers and if you find them, like Yoong Ming did, send them in because I think it would be fascinating to see what we were like and what we were doing .....

YM sent in this photo of Wan Juin shot in London

Sam Tet Singapore/Johor Gathering Held @ NTU On Feb 8

Chan Kiang Por and Chin Yong Yong were as usual jovial and friendly; the years that had gone past us did not affect our friendship. We spent some time talking about their families and work. Yong2x works as a warehouse/logistics manager, Kiang Por is a consultant with a GLC linked entity. Both seemed settled and happy with their lives! The rest of the Sam Tet guys were mostly our junior except for Thai Kwong and Lam We Soon of 1974. I was pleasantly surprised to meet Umno and Philip Lip's brothers and was able to get their contacts.

Having attended the gathering I am convinced that the Sam Tet Alumni spirit is alive and doing well provided a small group of people is committed to keeping the gatherings organised! Tali and Kee Mun you have your jobs cut out for you!
